CPR/AED Training Center - 8/3/2009

  • St. Johns County Fire Rescue (SJCFR) is launching a new program aimed at training SJC residents in the skills needed to perform basic CPR and First Aid as well as operate an AED in an Emergency situation. SJCFR will now be offering HeartSaver CPR training which is authorized by the American Heart Association (AHA). These classes will be taught by SJCFR through our AHA approved and recognized Training Center. If more people had CPR training, the number of individuals who die from sudden cardiac arrest could be dramatically reduced according to the AHA. CPR is therapy that anyone can do to save a life, and this training is something SJCFR is pleased to offer as a learning opportunity to our residents. Classes offered through the AHA Training Center: ? Heartsaver CPR ? This is a modular course that teaches rescuers how to recognize and treat life-threatening emergencies, including cardiac arrest and chocking for adult, child and infant victims. This course does not teach the use of AED?s. ? Heartsaver AED ? The Heartsaver AED course teaches the basic techniques of adult CPR and use of an AED. Child AED and infant/child CPR may also be taught as part of this class. ? Heartsaver First Aid ? The Heartsaver First Aid course teaches rescuers to effectively recognize and treat emergencies in the critical first minutes until EMS personnel arrive. The Heartsaver First Aid course provides a complete health and safety training solution for first aid, adult CPR and AED. Optional modules include infant CPR and environmental emergencies. ? BLS for healthcare professionals ? This course provides in-depth training in CPR and ventilation techniques for the professional rescuer and healthcare professionals. Use of the AED is also covered in this program. This course is longer than the Heartsaver Programs and is accepted by most organizations as continuing education. Select this program if you hold a professional license, work in a healthcare facility, or volunteer with a fire department of EMS Service. ? ACLS for healthcare professionals - This course is designed for licensed healthcare professionals who work in an environment where advanced cardiac lifesaving measures are implemented. Students for this course routinely include Physicians, Nurses and Paramedics. The course covers reviews of BLS skills, advanced airway and ventilator techniques, emergency pharmacology, defibrillation-pacing-cardioversion, and Acute MI and stroke algorithms. All community based classes will be held at the SJCFR Administration Building located at: 3657 Gaines Rd, St. Augustine, FL 32084. Classes will be limited to the first 20 participants, with a minimum class size of 5. In the event less than five participants are signed up, the training will be rescheduled or class tuition will be refunded. Off site classes are available for large groups on a case by case basis depending on instructor availability and can be requested by contacting the Training Coordinator at (904) 209-1759 You can view course schedules or sign up for the courses by visiting us on the web at: http://www.sjcfl.us/BCC/Fire_Rescue/CPR.aspx ,or you can contact us by phone at (904) 209-1759

Fireworks 2009 - 7/1/2009

  • St. Johns County Fire Rescue (SJCFR) officials encourage residents to use extreme caution when using or discharging fireworks of any kind during 4th of July celebrations. In the State of Florida it is illegal to use any firework that either goes boom, or leaves the ground. Officials would also strongly encourage residents to attend the public fireworks displays in lieu of private fireworks demonstrations. These public displays are put on by licensed professional vendors, and are permitted on a case-by-case basis by local fire marshals, who ensure that the fireworks are used in a controlled and safe environment. Below are some helpful safety tips to follow if you do plan on using legal recreational fireworks: ? Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks ? Read and follow all warnings and instructions ? Be sure other people are out of range before lighting fireworks. ? Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from the house, dry leaves, and flammable materials. ? Never try to relight fireworks that have not fully functioned. ? Keep a bucket of water nearby in case of a malfunction or fire. Please remember these safety tips and have a safe and happy 4th. For more information on firework safety contact the Fire Marshals office at (904) 209-1700. For more information please contact Jeremy Robshaw SJCFR Public Information Officer at (904) 209-1750
