St. Johns County Fire Rescue Heartsaver Courses
CPR Training
Why CPR Training?
If more people had CPR training, the number of individuals who die from sudden cardiac arrest could be dramatically reduced. That's the word from the American Heart Association, which is calling for renewed efforts to learn CPR. Since the odds of surviving cardiac arrest drop 7 percent to 10 percent every minute without CPR, resuscitation has a big impact on survival. CPR can be done by anyone. It is a therapy that anyone can use to save a life. St. Johns County Fire Rescue is pleased to offer this valuable learning opportunity to our residents.
Course Descriptions
Heartsaver CPR
The Heartsaver CPR course is a modular CPR course that teaches rescuers how to recognize and treat life-threatening emergencies, including cardiac arrest and choking for responsive adult, child and infant victims. Students also learn to recognize the warning signs of heart attack and stroke in adults and breathing difficulties in children. This program teaches rescue breathing with and without the use of barrier devices. This course does not teach the use of AEDs.
Heartsaver AED
The Heartsaver AED course teaches the basic techniques of adult CPR and use of an AED. Child AED and infant/child CPR may be taught if students live or work in a setting where children are present. Students also learn to use barrier devices in CPR and give first aid for choking in the responsive victim. The course teaches how to recognize the signs of 3 major emergencies: heart attack, stroke and choking.
Heartsaver First Aid
The Heartsaver First Aid course teaches rescuers to effectively recognize and treat emergencies in the critical first minutes until EMS personnel arrive. The Heartsaver First Aid course provides a complete health and safety training solution for first aid, adult CPR and AED. Optional modules include infant CPR and environmental emergencies.
BLS for Healthcare Professionals
This course provides in-depth training in CPR and ventilation techniques for the professional rescuer and healthcare professionals. Use of the AED is also covered in this program. This course is longer than the Heartsaver Programs and is accepted by most organizations as continuing education. Select this program if you hold a professional license, work in a healthcare facility, or volunteer with a fire department of EMS Service.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
This course is designed for licensed healthcare professionals who work in an environment where advanced cardiac lifesaving measures are implemented. Students for this course routinely include Physicians, Nurses and Paramedics. The course covers reviews of BLS skills, advanced airway and ventilator techniques, emergency pharmacology, defibrillation-pacing-cardioversion, and Acute MI and stroke algorithms.
