A Message from Captain Reducio
Ahoy Mateys! I’m Captain Reducio, the newest buccaneer to the crew here at the St. Johns County Solid Waste Division.
Years ago, I embarked on a perilous voyage, crossing the seven seas, as I followed the turbulent waste stream on my boat, the “Steward Ship.”
I’ve been in search of a long lost treasure chest that contains the secrets of how to live sustainably
On my quest, I battled the Marine Debris Sea Monster and teamed up with Commodore Compost to fight a rogue fleet of food waste.
My map then led me to the Cove of Single-Use Plastics, where I was attacked by the ghost ship, “Poly Styrene;” skippered by the Sinister Captain Straw and crewed by the spirits of undead plastic bags and bottles that never decompose. Shiver me Timbers!
But using the power of the 3 Arrrrs!!! “Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle,” I can beat these scallywags and continue on my expedition; so I can find the chest, unlock the secrets, and break the Curse of Contamination! But I can’t do it alone.
So, join me in this effort by making sure we all Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Right, savvy?! …or ye be walking the plank! Hahahahaha

American Flag Rescue Program
Retire Your Flags
The American Flag Rescue Program was founded in 2019 by Chris Benjamin of the St. Johns County Solid Waste Division. This program provides residents with the opportunity to properly retire flags with honor and respect.
American Flag Drop Boxes are available to the public at over 25 locations throughout St. Johns County.

At the Solid Waste Division, we are committed to educating students and residents of St. Johns County about the importance of sustainability and environmental stewardship. We offer school presentations, facility tours, and participate in community events with the goal of increasing awareness about solid waste management and the importance of recycling. As one of the fastest-growing counties in the country, we rely on a dedicated staff of volunteers to help us with these outreach efforts.

Recycling Resource Program
St. Johns County is assembling a network of volunteers to form a Recycling Resource Team. Your experience and familiarity with your own neighborhood is a powerful asset to help educate friends and neighbors about our recycling program.
These volunteers will serve as liaisons in their communities and provide the latest recycling news and information. The goal will be to improve recycling efficiency through awareness and education. With a better understanding of our program, we can dispel recycling myths and eliminate “Wish-cycling” and contamination.

Adopt-A-Road Program
The St. Johns County Adopt-A-Road program is a litter prevention campaign designed to remove unsightly litter and debris from county roads and improve the quality of the environment. This program is not only directed to benefit the community, but it enables citizens to make a positive impact by demonstrating their pride in keeping St. Johns County beautiful.
This program owes its popularity and success to its many dedicated volunteers. By working together, we build a sense of community pride, which in turn leads to a cleaner and safer place to live. When we build a sense of community, we are building a better tomorrow.

Guidelines to Adopt-A-Road
How-To
Decide Which Road to Adopt
Since you will be checking your road periodically, we suggest selecting a location near your home, school or business. Otherwise, St. Johns County can suggest suitable roads. Determine how many people will be needed to adopt the road, whether it is a safe and accessible area to pick up litter and if there is sufficient parking, etc. (Must be at least one mile in length.)
Contact Us and Take Action
Contact our office to confirm your road section and participation in the Adopt-a-Road Program by completing an “Adopt A Road” Litter Removal Agreement to adopt the roadway.
Clean Up!
Participants are provided with garbage bags and supplies for clean-up days. In addition, each adopted section of road will be marked with a sign with your group’s name to receive recognition for the group’s contribution to their community. We will order your signs and have them installed at the proper locations.
Share Your Results and Fill Out a Post Clean-up Report
When the cleanups are completed, the group will fill out a Post Clean Up Report and submit it to the Solid Waste Division . If you have debris that is too large, heavy, or hazardous for your group to remove, let us know in the Post-Cleanup Report.

Facility Tour
St. Johns County Solid Waste Division provides facility tours to individuals, families, and groups throughout the county (including schools, businesses, and government agencies). Learn firsthand about the closed landfill, transfer station operations, and the processing of garbage and recycling after it is collected at the curb. Schedule a tour or request a presentation at our education center.
School Presentations
We believe change starts with the next generation. That’s why we’re committed to educating St. Johns County students about the importance of environmental stewardship. The Solid Waste Division offers several educational presentations that focus on reducing waste, litter prevention, and providing students with a more in-depth understanding of our recycling program. Presentations are offered to classes and school assemblies for grades K-12.

Community Groups & HOAs
We offer support to county residents through public education and community engagement by providing instructional videos and short presentations on garbage, recycling, and yard waste services. Request a Solid Waste representative to attend your HOA or neighborhood group meeting.
Events
In an effort to protect our environment, St. Johns County offers seasonal community collection days. These are opportunities for county residents to safely dispose of household hazardous waste, electronics, chemicals and rechargeable batteries free of charge.
