St. Johns Cultural Council & VFW Post 2391 Shine Spotlight on Veterans with A Veterans Day Photography Contest & Juried Exhibition

The St. Johns Cultural Council, in partnership with St. Johns County, is expanding its Art in Public Spaces program to include the Health & Human Services Building. The expansion launches with a photography contest honoring American veterans, inviting artists to capture powerful images centered around the theme: “The Veteran and the American Flag.”
The initiative arrives on the heels of the 250th anniversaries of the U.S. Army and Navy and the objective is to celebrate the service and sacrifice of veterans. Rick McAllister, a professional photographer, Vietnam combat veteran and First City Honor Guard is the architect behind this concept. McAllister approached the Cultural Council with the idea, and the proposal quickly garnered full support from the Cultural Council, St. Johns County, Health & Human Services, and Veterans’ Services.
The Veterans Day Photography Contest will accept submissions from August 1 through September 30, 2025. Artists from across the local, regional, and national communities are invited to submit up to three original photographs featuring both an American veteran and a depiction of the American flag. Entries will be judged by members of the St. Augustine Camera Club along with McAllister. Between 20 and 35 photographs will be selected for the exhibition, Stories of American Veterans, which will be displayed in the reFrame Gallery at the St. Johns County Health & Human Services Building, located at 200 San Sebastian View.
The winning works will be announced on Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, at VFW Post 2391. An opening reception for the exhibition is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 20, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the St. Johns County Administration Building. During the reception, three award winners and a Best of Show will be revealed. Attendees are invited to enjoy hors d’oeuvres and celebrate the selected photographers and the veterans who inspired their work.
