Local Quilters Bring Comfort to Community Members in Need

Third Saturday in March is National Quilting Day

When St. Johns County helps a resident repair their home, the work goes beyond walls, roofs, and ramps. Sometimes, it comes stitched together, one quilt at a time.

Through a growing partnership with the St. Augustine Piecemakers Quilters Guild, the St. Johns County Housing and Community Development Division is helping bring comfort and care to selected clients receiving Housing Rehabilitation Services.

Members of the local guild generously create and donate handmade quilts to residents who may be recovering from illness, facing personal hardship, or living alone.

For many recipients, these quilts are more than blankets. They are tangible reminders that their community sees, values, and cares about their well-being.

“Our housing rehab work focuses on safety and stability, but this partnership adds something deeply human,” said Jennifer Harvey, St. Johns County Housing and Community Development Manager. “The quilts provide warmth and comfort at moments when our clients may need it most.”

Each quilt is crafted by hand, often taking weeks to complete. Guild members carefully select fabrics and patterns, knowing their work will become part of someone’s daily life, offering both physical warmth and emotional reassurance.

The partnership also highlights the broader impact of Housing Rehabilitation Services. While repairs improve accessibility, safety, and quality of life, the addition of these donated quilts provides a human touch and sense of community.

“This collaboration shows what’s possible when local organizations and County services work together,” Harvey said. “It’s a simple gesture that carries a lot of meaning.”

St. Johns County plans to continue sharing stories that spotlight the real people behind its programs and the community partners who help make a difference every day.
