May 2026 Designated as National Historic Preservation Month

Commissioner Joseph presented a proclamation on behalf of the Board of County Commissioners

At the May 19, 2026, St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners Regular Meeting, Commissioner Krista Joseph presented a proclamation on behalf of the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners, recognizing May 2026 as National Historic Preservation Month.

The proclamation was received by Megan Wright, Environmental Specialist, along with County staff and partners dedicated to historic preservation in St. Johns County.

The proclamation reads:

WHEREAS, The National Trust for Historic Preservation established May as Historic Preservation Month in 2005, extending the National Preservation Week, which began in 1975; and

WHEREAS, the driving force behind this year’s theme is “America 250”, in which the United States will celebrate its 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026, marking a historic milestone since the signing of the Declaration of Independence; and

WHEREAS, through inspiring events, educational programs, and civic engagement, we seek to spark pride in our shared American values, honor the courage and service of our veterans, revere our republic, and encourage neighbors to come together in the spirit of patriotism; and

WHEREAS, National Historic Preservation Month is a time dedicated to honoring, celebrating, and raising awareness of the importance of preserving our nation’s historic places and communities, and to pledge the protection of our cultural heritage in posterity; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Johns County, Florida that May 2026 be designated as

NATIONAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION MONTH

Recognizing that historic preservation plays a vital role in fostering community sustainability, economic stimulation, and local revitalization.

PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Johns County, Florida this 19th day of May 2026.
