Maria Jefferson Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution planned an event to celebrate the 250th Birthday of America and honored the nation’s heroes by remembering their service and sacrifice in a ceremony held on July 2, 2026, at the St. Augustine National Cemetery. To show gratitude over 1,200 flags were placed on the graves. Krista Joseph, District 4, a member of the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners, was invited to participate in the ceremony.
Commissioner Krista Joseph was the keynote speaker. Maria Jefferson Chapter, NSDAR were reminded of her personal sacrifice. Joseph is a mother of two Navy Seals and a Gold Star mother. Her son Charlie was killed in 2016 in a firefight with ISIS. She shared the final letter her son, Charles Keating IV, wrote to his sister.
Groups participating in the event included: The Maria Jefferson Chapter NSDAR, St. Augustine Chapter SAR, St. Johns Veterans Council, Military Officers Association of America, VFW Honor Guard Riders, St. Augustine JROTC, St. Joseph’s Academy, Scouting America, Cub Scout Troop from RB Hunt Elementary School, and many citizens and children.
