Community leaders, behavioral health professionals, educators, first responders, advocates, and residents gathered this week for the Zero Suicide St. Johns Summit to raise awareness about suicide prevention, examine local trends, and provide community members with tools to recognize and respond to someone experiencing a mental health crisis. The Office of Public Affairs produced a video to recap the important event.
The summit, hosted by LSF Health Systems, followed the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners’ designation of Aug. 12 as Zero Suicide St. Johns Day. The designation recognizes suicide as a critical public health issue and encourages residents, organizations, and community partners to work together to strengthen suicide prevention efforts.
Zero Suicide Communities is a national movement that began in 2012 with a focus on raising awareness, recognizing the signs and symptoms of suicidal thoughts, and developing systems and community partnerships to help prevent suicide. During the summit, presenters examined suicide trends in St. Johns County and compared local data with statewide and national patterns.
Presenters emphasized that suicide prevention is a communitywide responsibility because friends, neighbors, and colleagues are often among the first people to recognize that someone is struggling. The summit was designed to equip attendees with the knowledge and suicide prevention tools needed to recognize distress, offer support, and connect individuals with appropriate resources.
St. Johns County was specifically selected as the focus of the summit because of concerning local suicide data. Presenters noted that the county has one of the highest suicide rates in Florida, underscoring the importance of increasing awareness and providing residents with the skills and resources necessary to help someone who may be struggling.
The summit reinforced the importance of coordinated community action and the potential impact of even one person having the knowledge and confidence to intervene. Organizers emphasized that the goal of the Zero Suicide initiative is to help save lives and that preventing even one suicide makes the effort worthwhile.
The Zero Suicide St. Johns initiative will continue working with community partners to increase awareness, strengthen prevention efforts, and ensure residents have access to resources that can help individuals experiencing a crisis.
Through this initiative, St. Johns County remains dedicated to supporting Community Well-Being, a key priority of its Strategic Plan.
