Kathryn Rosenburg, Library Programs Coordinator at the Main Branch Library, has been chosen as one of 14 librarians in the country for MIT’s Public Library Innovation Exchange (PLIX) Ambassador Program. Through the program, she will help expand innovative STEAM learning opportunities for the library system.

Rosenburg applied because she saw it as an opportunity to bring new and creative Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) learning activities to the community.

“I want to learn from others, work on new ideas together, and find ways to keep STEAM programs strong and sustainable,” Rosenburg said. “I also want to take these programs beyond the Main Branch Library and make them available to all of our communities.”

During the program, Rosenburg hopes to learn what has worked well for other libraries and how they create hands-on STEAM activities. One of Kathryn’s goals is to create 12 portable STEAM kits that staff at any branch can use with very little setup, helping expand access across the library system.

“I want learning to feel fun, creative, and welcoming,” she said. “Sometimes STEAM can seem intimidating, and I want to change that. I want both patrons and staff to feel confident trying something new.”

Currently, as the Main Branch Library’s Program Coordinator, Rosenburg has developed a Learning Hub that offers monthly hands-on STEAM activities focused on topics like dinosaurs, outer space, and the human body.

She has also painted murals on the branch walls and windows to make the library feel bright and welcoming. Her murals in the teen area and near the seed library stay up all year, while the mural on the windows at the entrance to the children’s area changes with different themes and events. These artworks create a lively, engaging space for families and visitors of all ages.

Rosenburg’s selection shows her commitment to accessible STEAM learning experiences for people of all ages in St. Johns County. For more information about STEAM programs visit the St. Johns County Public Library System.
