At the April 2, 2024, St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners Regular Meeting, Commissioner Roy Alaimo, District 3 issued a proclamation recognizing April 2024 as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Representatives from Health and Human Services (HHS), as well as Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF), attended the meeting to receive the proclamation.
Child abuse and neglect, are not isolated issues; they are community problems that necessitate collective action. Recognizing this, Commissioner Alaimo emphasized the vital role of community involvement in preventing these tragedies.
Amidst stressful situations and lacking resources, individuals may find themselves at a loss, resulting in child maltreatment. However, the majority of these cases are preventable with the support of an engaged and supportive community.
The ramifications of child abuse and neglect are profound. They can lead to criminal behavior, substance abuse, health problems, and risky behavior. Yet, we can mitigate these risks by ensuring that every family has the necessary support to nurture their children in a healthy environment.
Effective prevention programs thrive on partnerships forged among various entities, including mental health providers, social service agencies, schools, faith communities, civic organizations, law enforcement agencies, and the business community. It is a collective effort, and all citizens are encouraged to support families to raise their children in a safe and nurturing environment.
