County Road 2209 Roadway Expansion Underway

Major corridor project will ease congestion from County Road 210 to State Road 16

A major roadway expansion project is in progress along County Road 2209, where St. Johns County is constructing a new four-lane corridor between Silverleaf Parkway and State Road 16 to improve traffic flow in the northern part of the County. The Office of Public Affairs produced a video to highlight the progress thus far.

The current 3.9-mile construction segment is part of the larger CR 2209 Central Project, which will eventually span 7.7 miles from County Road 210 to State Road 16. The new road is designed as a four-lane divided highway, consistent with the design of Silverleaf Parkway to the north, and includes more than 200 feet of right-of-way to accommodate long-term transportation needs.

“This project in particular will take a new roadway segment from Silverleaf Parkway all the way down to International Golf Parkway and then further down to State Road 16,” said Duane Kent, County Engineer for St. Johns County Public Works. “It’ll be four lanes like Silverleaf Parkway is to the north.”

Construction began in Spring 2024 and is currently a little over halfway complete. The County expects to finish the project in Summer 2026.

Once completed, the new CR 2209 segment is expected to alleviate congestion on nearby corridors and enhance daily commuting for residents, particularly during peak travel hours.

“If anybody drives around St. Johns County, they know the roadway infrastructure is needy,” Kent said. “We get stuck in traffic in those peak hours—AM and PM—and this will help with that commute as you travel through the County.”

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is also partnering on the project, contributing several million dollars to help fund the improvements.

The CR 2209 Central Project reflects the County’s commitment to strategic transportation investment, regional mobility, and the continued development of efficient infrastructure to support a growing population.
