The SJC Stewardship Series is a monthly video series highlighting history, culture, and conservation efforts in St. Johns County. The series supports the St. Johns County Strategic Plan priorities of Community Trust and Enhance Conservation.
In this episode, discover how Alpine Groves Park protects natural areas along the St. Johns River, preserves the county’s citrus-growing history, and provides opportunities for passive recreation and outdoor exploration.
Located between the Historic Bartram Scenic Highway and the St. Johns River, Alpine Groves Park is a 55-acre property known for its paved walking trails, family-friendly amenities, scenic river views, and popular sunset and photography locations.
St. Johns County purchased the property in 2000 with support from a Florida Communities Trust grant. The park opened to the public in 2007 and has since become one of the county’s most popular passive recreation destinations.
Beyond its natural beauty, Alpine Groves Park preserves an important part of local agricultural history. The property includes the Bennett-Harris House, a farmhouse dating to the late 1800s, and a historic fruit packing shed that reflect the citrus industry boom that shaped communities such as Fruit Cove, Orangedale, and Switzerland.
