St. Johns County Celebrates 2nd Annual Student Shadow Program

Three local high school students completed the course from June 9 to 17.

Three local high school students from St. Johns County recently completed the 2025 St. Johns County Student Shadow Program, an eight-day immersive program that included tours, activities, and engaging discussions with County leadership and experts across various fields of County operations. The Office of Public Affairs produced a video summarizing the program and featuring interviews with the students.

Alexandra Nay, a rising junior at St. Johns Virtual School, Ishikta Kumari, a rising senior, and Srija Patchipulusu, a rising junior, both from Allen D. Nease High School, completed the prestigious program.

“The St. Johns Student Shadow Program is designed to engage and empower local youth by providing them with a firsthand look at how county government works,” said Savannah Evans, St. Johns County Administrative Manager. “It gives students the opportunity to observe and participate in daily operations across departments, helping them develop a deeper understanding of civic responsibility and the role of local government in their community.”

From June 9 to 17, the students participated in tours and activities. These included County Administration, the Emergency Operations Center, Health and Human Services, Public Works, Utilities water and wastewater treatment plants, Parks and Recreation beach and pier operations, Public Affairs, as well as attending an Economic Development Industry Roundtable with local healthcare companies, a private tour of the St. Augustine Airport, public board meetings and interactions with the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners.

“We were so fortunate to have Alexandra, Ishikta, and Srija join us this year,” Evans added. “They brought energy, curiosity, and thoughtful perspectives that truly reflect future leadership we hope to see here in St. Johns County and wherever their bright futures take them.”
