The comprehensive document addresses eleven key long-range planning elements, including land use, housing, and transportation.
During their Regular Meeting on July 22, 2025, the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners (BCC) approved a motion to transmit the St. Johns County 2050 Comprehensive Plan for review by state agencies. After the 60-day review period, the BCC will hold an adoption hearing. Details of the plan are available at www.sjcfl.us/comprehensive-plan.
“This is a huge milestone for St. Johns County,” said Mike Roberson, Director of the Growth Management Department. “This plan helps residents identify their vision for the future of the community, coordinates local decision-making, and provides guidance to landowners and developers. This legacy document will help shape St. Johns County for decades. We are grateful for all the input we received through community engagement meetings, online surveys, and public meetings.”
The 2050 Comprehensive Plan is a long-range plan that helps guide the County’s actions through clearly stated goals, objectives, and policies to address the community’s future growth and development. The plan is broken down into chapters (referred to as ‘Elements’), each covering a different topic area of: Land Use, Transportation, Housing, Infrastructure, Coastal Management, Conservation, Recreation Open Space, Intergovernmental Coordination, Capital Improvements, Economic Development, and Property Rights.
The County’s Comprehensive Plan requires an update under Florida Statutes 163.3184 and 163.3191. Once adopted by the BCC, the 2050 Comprehensive Plan will replace the County’s current 2025 Comprehensive Plan (PDF).
“We kicked off this project nearly two years ago, and community dialogue, debate, and discussions have helped create a planning document we can all be proud of,” said Roberson.
