The St. Johns County Parks and Recreation Department has renewed its Certified Autism Center designation, with at least 80% of staff completing updated autism and sensory training.
“We want every family to feel like there is a place for them in Parks and Recreation,” said Tess Simpson, Community Program Manager. “Renewing our Certified Autism Center certification shows that we are continuing to learn, train our staff and find ways to make our programs and facilities more welcoming and inclusive for individuals with autism and their families.”
The department first received certification in April 2024, when the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards also conducted on-site reviews of St. Johns County parks and facilities in order to create sensory guides and additional recommendations to improve the visitor experience. Parks and Recreation sites are included on IBCCES’s app and on AutismTravel.com, a free online resource for parents that lists certified locations and professionals.
“St. Johns County Parks and Recreation’s continued commitment to accessibility demonstrates the value of ongoing education and training in creating more welcoming community spaces,” said Myron Pincomb, Ceo and Board Chairman of IBCCES, in a press release. “By renewing its Certified Autism Center designation, the department is continuing to build on the work it has already done and strengthening its ability to provide inclusive recreational experiences for individuals and families throughout the county.”
Parks and Recreation’s initial certification was part of a larger initiative led by the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce, to ensure that the area offers multiple certified options for entertainment, recreation, and lodging for autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals and their families.
“This isn’t something we want to accomplish once,” said Simpson. “It’s a commitment we want to continue building on year after year.”
