St. Johns County Recognizes February 2026 as Black History Month

Commissioner Arnold presented a proclamation on behalf of the Board of County Commissioners
At the February 3, 2026, St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners Regular Meeting, Commissioner Sarah Arnold presented a proclamation recognizing February 2026 as Black History Month.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the federal recognition for Black Americans. By celebrating Black History Month, we acknowledge the vital role that Black Americans have played in shaping our nation, contributing immensely to arts, sciences, education, governance, and culture of St. Johns County and the United States.
The proclamation was received by Gregory White of the West Augustine Historical Community Development Corporation and Dwala Willis of the West Augustine Community Redevelopment Agency.
The proclamation reads:
WHEREAS, the year 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of the federal recognition for Black Americans, an observance that began as a weeklong celebration and has since grown into an overall cultural observance of Black History throughout the month of February; and
WHEREAS, the theme for 2026, “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” highlights the significant accomplishments and developments in Black history over the past century; and
WHEREAS, by celebrating Black History Month, we acknowledge the vital role that Black Americans have played in shaping our nation, contributing immensely to arts, sciences, education, governance, and culture of St. Johns County and the United States; and
WHEREAS, during Black History Month all Americans are encouraged to participate in events and activities that promote understanding and appreciation of Black history and culture; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Johns County, Florida, that February 2026 be designated as
Black History Month
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners of St. Johns County, Florida, this 3rd day of February 2026.
