St. Johns County Traffic Signal at U.S. 1 and Pine Island Road Fully Operational

The $2.8 million improvements include a new signal and additional turning lanes

A new traffic signal and intersection improvements, including additional turning lanes, at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Pine Island Road are now operational.

A turning lane was added on U.S. 1, along with a signalized left-turn and right-turn lane on Pine Island Road. Through traffic to Stratton Road will not be permitted; however, a U-turn area is available just north on U.S. 1.

“Adding the light provides key improvements to the intersection for residents,” said Chris Gatchell, St. Johns County Public Works Project Manager.

The $2.8 million project, funded by the State of Florida and St. Johns County Public Works, began in early 2024. It included land acquisition, coordination with the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) for synchronization, an agreement with FDOT for the signal work, and drainage improvements to support new lanes on both roadways.

This project is part of an ongoing effort by the Public Works Department to improve traffic flow on St. Johns County roadways.
