SJC Opens $41 Million Segment of County Road 2209 Between Silverleaf Parkway and International Golf Parkway

Drivers urged to use caution with new traffic flows near schools in the area

St. Johns County opened a new $41 million portion of County Road 2209 on Oct. 28, following a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The new roadway connects Silverleaf Parkway to International Golf Parkway, creating a four-lane divided corridor designed to improve traffic flow in northern St. Johns County. The Office of Public Affairs produced a video highlighting the ceremony.

District 1 Commissioner Christian Whitehurst, District 3 Commissioner Clay Murphy, and District 5 Commissioner Ann Taylor also attended the ceremony, joining District 2 Commissioner Sarah Arnold, project partners, and community representatives to celebrate the opening.

Drivers are encouraged to stay alert and follow new traffic patterns in the area. Families should use caution when dropping off and picking up students, as several schools are located near this segment of CR 2209.

“This project represents a major investment in public safety and connectivity for our community,” said Commissioner Arnold. “By improving this critical intersection, we’re not only reducing congestion, we’re enhancing safety with upgraded signals, turn lanes, and better visibility. We’re also strengthening our entire transportation network so residents can move safely, efficiently, and confidently throughout our County.”

“This is a major improvement for St. Johns County,” said Greg Caldwell, Director of Public Works. “This more than three-mile stretch connects Silverleaf Parkway to International Golf Parkway and will transform the transportation network for the northwest portion of the county.”

Sheriff Robert A. Hardwick noted the project’s impact on nearby schools, including Tocoi Creek High School.

-“How are we going to relieve one of the biggest high schools in St. Johns County—2,700 students and almost 300 staff?” said Sheriff Hardwick. “You’re going to see that being tested this afternoon when the school empties. And this Friday night, when the Tocoi Creek Toros have a home game, you’ll see it tested again.”

The 3.9-mile segment is part of the larger County Road 2209 Central Project, which will eventually span 7.7 miles from County Road 210 to State Road 16. Construction began in Spring 2024 and is expected to be fully completed by Summer 2026. Once finished, the corridor is expected to ease congestion on nearby roads and reduce dependence on Interstate 95 for local commuting.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) partnered with St. Johns County on the project, contributing several million dollars toward the improvements.
