The month of May is designated as Gold Star Awareness Month.

At the May 6, 2025, St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners (BCC) Regular Meeting, Chair Krista Joseph, District 4, presented a Proclamation to designate May as Gold Star Awareness Month. Participating in the presentation were Ken Moreland and Joy Plant as well as Aaron Peña, Retired Navy SEAL, E8 Senior Chief; Mark Stevens Navy SEAL , E7 Chief; and Drummond Boord, Navy SEAL Commander. Here is the Proclamation that was presented:

WHEREAS, the term “Gold Star” began during World War I when American families displayed flags in homes, businesses, schools, and churches with a gold star for each loved one lost in military service; and

WHEREAS, a debt of gratitude is owed to those who gave their lives in military service to secure the blessing of liberty; and

WHEREAS, we have an obligation to acknowledge the losses of our service members and ensure that their families are not forgotten; and

WHEREAS, during the month of May, we remember our commitment to Gold Star Families who carry on with pride and courage despite their tragic loss; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, by the Board of County Commissioners of

St. Johns County, Florida that the Month of May 2025, be recognized as

GOLD STAR AWARENESS MONTH

calling upon all members of our community to bring Gold Star Awareness

to honor the memory of the fallen and pledge support to St. Johns County Gold Star Families.
