Commissioner Murphy Presents Proclamation for National Historic Preservation Month

The proclamation was accepted by historic preservation expert Dr. Leslee Keys.

During the May 20, 2025, Regular Meeting of the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners, Commissioner Clay Murphy, District 3, presented a Proclamation to celebrate National Historic Preservation Month. Dr. Leslee F. Keys is the Principal with Keys and Associates, LLC, a Heritage, Arts and Cultural Preservation firm based in St. Augustine, Florida accepted the Proclamation. Dr. Keys is a retired History/Public History faculty member and Director of Historic Preservation with Flagler College.

Here is the Proclamation that was presented:

WHEREAS, The National Trust for Historic Preservation established May as Historic Preservation Week, which began in 1973, later extending the celebration to National Historic Preservation Month in 2005 with this year marking the 20th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, National Historic Preservation Month is a time dedicated to honoring, celebrating, and raising awareness of the importance of preserving our nation’s historic places and communities, to pledge the protection of our cultural heritage in posterity; and

WHEREAS, National Historic Preservation Month is a chance to show why Historic Preservation matters and is an opportunity to share the impact that it creates, including how protected places spark joy, inspire wonder, and connect us to our shared history in ways that shape our future; and

WHEREAS, the driving force behind this year’s theme is “Power of Place” which includes the countless ways, big and small, that historic preservation impacts and strengthens communities, breathes new life into neighborhoods, supports a healthier planet, and builds a more just and connected society; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Johns County, Florida that May 2025 be designated as

National Historic Preservation Month

PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Johns County, Florida this 20th day of May 2025.
