Quick Overview
St. Johns County will temporarily close the Porpoise Point Vehicular Access Ramp beginning Jan. 5, 2026 for improvements. The resiliency project will raise and harden the ramp to protect it from flooding during astronomical tides and tropical weather events. The ramp is expected to reopen to vehicles in May 2026.
Project Description
The Porpoise Point Vehicular Access Ramp project is complete and reopened to the public in April 2026, more than one month ahead of schedule. The project included resiliency upgrades to improve long-term access and durability of the ramp.
Originally scheduled for completion in May 2026, construction began on Jan. 5, 2026, and was completed on budget by mid-April. The ramp provides primary vehicular access to Porpoise Point, located at the corner of Genoa Road and Porpoise Point Drive in Vilano Beach.
A four-wheel-drive vehicle is required to safely navigate the sand at Porpoise Point. Seasonal beach operations, including lifeguard staffing and nighttime gate closures during sea turtle nesting season, remain in effect.
The project was completed with support from St. Johns County Public Works, INTERA, Inc., and Hayward Construction Group.
The project advances the key priorities of Enhance Conservation, Community Well-Being, and Infrastructure in the St. Johns County Strategic Plan by strengthening coastal resiliency, improving community access to public recreation, and delivering responsible infrastructure improvements that protect both public assets and neighboring properties.
