Old A1A North Restoration Project Completed

St. Johns County has completed a critical capital improvement project to restore infrastructure in the Summer Haven North area, also known as Old A1A North. The Office of Public Affairs produced a video to highlight this history restoration effort.

The area sustained significant damage during Hurricane Matthew in 2016, which brought high winds and strong storm surge that reshaped the barrier peninsula and destroyed the roadway.

As part of the restoration project, the County rebuilt the roadway and reinforced the surrounding infrastructure to improve resilience against future coastal storms. The effort also included repairs to the rock revetment that had long protected the shoreline in Summer Haven North. Though the revetment helped lessen the storm’s impact during Hurricane Matthew, it was damaged and required structural improvements to continue providing effective protection.

The project was carefully planned and executed to respect the area’s environmental sensitivity while delivering long-term durability. Engineers developed a solution that balanced restoration needs with coastal preservation and storm resilience.

Throughout the project, St. Johns County provided regular updates to residents and maintained a strong focus on safety, access, and environmental stewardship. The completed improvements restored critical connectivity for the community and strengthened one of the County’s most vulnerable coastal corridors.

This project reflects St. Johns County’s ongoing commitment to investing in infrastructure, protecting coastal neighborhoods, and enhancing storm readiness across the region.
