Porpoise Point Vehicular Access Ramp Temporarily Closing for Improvements Beginning January 5, 2026
Resiliency project will harden ramp, add sea wall, new attendant booth
St. Johns County will temporarily close the Porpoise Point Vehicular Access Ramp beginning January 5, 2026 for improvements. The resiliency project will raise and harden the ramp to protect it from flooding during astronomical tides and tropical weather events. The ramp is expected to reopen to vehicles in May 2026.
The County will accommodate beach driving to the area during the project with an alternative access point, as conditions allow. During the closure, residents and visitors looking to access Porpoise Point may use the Vilano Beach Vehicular Access Ramp located at Vilano Beach Oceanfront Park, 2752 Anahma Drive, St. Augustine. Access will be dependent on the visibility of rocks along the Vilano Jetty. This area is closely monitored, and access may change periodically. Drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to follow posted signs and use caution in the area during construction. For the latest updates, follow SJC Beaches on Facebook.
“This resiliency project will provide much needed flood mitigation to the Porpoise Point community and also improve one of the busiest beach access ramps in the County,” said Corryn George, Project Manager for St. Johns County Public Works Department. “We planned construction outside of sea turtle nesting season, which runs annually from May 1 to October 31, to ensure we are in compliance with our Habitat Conservation Plan.”
The project advances the key priorities of Enhance Conservation, Community Well-Being, and Infrastructure in the St. Johns County Strategic Plan by strengthening coastal resiliency, improving community access to public recreation, and delivering responsible infrastructure improvements that protect both public assets and neighboring properties.
