SJC Reminds the Community of its American Flag Rescue Program

The county has saved nearly 20,000 flags since the program was launched in 2019.
As people across the United States prepare to celebrate Flag Day on Saturday, June 14, St. Johns County is reminding the community of the proper way to retire flags with honor and respect through its successful American Flag Rescue Program, which has rescued nearly 20,000 flags since 2019. The Office of Public Affairs produced a video to showcase the program.
There are more than 35 American Flag Rescue Program flag drop-off locations throughout St. Johns County. The locations include branches of the St. Johns County Public Library System, various County facilities and buildings, and every Ace Hardware store in St. Johns County. In June 2024, St. Johns County announced it had rescued more than 11,000 American flags through its American Flag Rescue Program.
The VFW Post 2391 in St. Augustine conducts the official decommission ceremonies, and retired veterans have enlisted to monitor and maintain the various collection sites.
