St. Johns County Secures $99,580 State Grant for EMS Training

The funds will help train 15 EMS staff in rural areas, focusing on addressing substance abuse.

The St. Johns County Office of Intergovernmental Affairs has announced it has secured a $99,580 Rural Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Training Grant offered through the Department of Health and Human Services. The funds will assist St. Johns County Fire Rescue (SJCFR) with training EMS personnel serving in rural areas, with a particular focus on addressing substance use disorders and recurring mental health conditions.

This grant will provide advanced medical training to 15 firefighters, enabling them to achieve paramedic certification and enhance the level of EMS care provided from the new Flagler Estates Fire Station.

“This grant enhances our ability to provide high-quality emergency medical care by helping us train 15 new paramedics—strengthening our response capacity in rural areas of southern St. Johns County, including Hastings and Flagler Estates,” said Bob Snell, Deputy Chief of Operations (EMS) for SJCFR.  “These efforts will directly translate into lives saved through improved treatment and community education surrounding substance use and mental health. SJCFR is extremely grateful for the steadfast support of Congressman John Rutherford and for the funding provided by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.”

In March 2025, St. Johns County and residents gathered to celebrate the start of construction on the $3.8 million Fire Station 21 & Sheriff’s Office. This new facility will be in the Flagler Estates Community and serve the surrounding Hastings area. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
