Seed Library branches out at the St. Johns County Public Library System

The St. Johns County Public Library System (SJCPLS), in partnership with the St. Augustine Amphitheatre, Edible Northeast Florida, and Maritime Creative, expanded its Seed Library to the Main Branch Library in January 2026. The Seed Library offers a free, community-focused gardening resource at one of SJCPLS’ busiest locations.

This initiative encourages seed saving and sharing within the community. Patrons can donate and take locally sourced and heirloom seeds to grow at home. The Seed Library at the Main Branch will be available during hours of operation.

The Seed Library was originally established at the Southeast Library Branch in 2019 to encourage seed saving and sharing within the community. The seed collection is donation-based and rotates seasonally, so offerings change throughout the year.

“We’re excited to introduce our new Seed Library, which makes gardening more accessible for everyone in our community,” said Nicole Jebbia, Branch Manager at the Main Branch Library. “This initiative not only encourages sustainable practices but also brings people together, growing the connection between the library and the community.”

The Main Branch’s Seed Library is complemented by a vibrant mural created by artist and library programs coordinator Kathryn Rosenburg. The artwork depicts bumblebees gathering pollen from Southern magnolia blossoms nestled among glossy green leaves. Rosenburg’s mural portrays local flora and emphasizes the vital role pollinators play in Florida’s natural habitats.

“I’m thrilled to see the Seed Library expanding across the library system,” said Katie Provow, Senior Farmers Market Manager at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre. “Having these resources available at the library makes them accessible for a wide variety of gardeners with locally adapted seeds from St. Johns County.”

County staff will partner with representatives from the St. Augustine Amphitheatre at the Amphitheatre Farmers Market on Saturday, March 7, to showcase the expanded Seed Library. Staff will distribute bags of seed potatoes and promote an upcoming farm tour featured in Edible Northeast Florida. Copies of the latest issue of Edible Northeast Florida will also be available at the market once printed. The public is encouraged to visit the community education booth, typically located next to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) table, to learn more.

The Main Branch Library, located at 1960 N. Ponce de Leon Blvd., St. Augustine, offers programs and services for all ages. To learn more about the many programs and initiatives of the SJCPLS, visit the St. Johns County Public Library Services website.
