Summer Haven Projects
Announcements
The Board of County Commissioners voted to fund the Permitting, Engineering, and Design for two projects at Summer Haven at the February 3rd, 2026 meeting.
Project 1 will be the excavation of the overwash sediments that have infilled Summer Haven River due to storm impacts from Hurricanes Ian and Nicole (2022). The sediment will be used to build a dune/berm system from R-200 to R-208.5, or from the northern revetment to the Old A1A access.
Project 2 is the design and permitting of a buried enhanced dune system that will armor the coastline and protect the houses from R-204.5 to R-208.5. More information to come.
Summer Haven/Matanzas Inlet Area Listen & Learn Meeting Held April 3, 2025
St. Johns County Coastal Management and St. Johns County Commissioner Clay Murphy, District 3, hosted a public meeting to learn more about the efforts and opportunities to address the Summer Haven and Matanzas Inlet area beach erosion, washovers, and breaches. Summer Haven Studies
INTERA-GEC has been tasked by St. Johns County to develop a list of environmentally and financially sustainable long-term solutions to maintain and stabilize the Summer Haven shoreline and flow of the river, and a separate report regarding Summerhouse.
For each potential feasible solution, INTERA has been directed by St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners to remain focused on, but not limited to, public benefits, extent of property protection, constructability, and probable costs and potential funding sources.
At the December 19, 2023, Board of County Commissioners meeting, SJC Coastal Management and Intera-GEC presented the findings of the Summer Haven River and Summerhouse study.
The Balmoral Group completed an economic analysis of the projects contemplated in the INTERA-GEC reports in July 2025.
USACE Intracoastal Dredging
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) plans to dredge the Intracoastal Waterway behind Summer Haven Island in 2027. The dredged sand will be used for beneficial use on the beach and dune along Summer Haven. The project is in the design phase, and more information will be forthcoming.

The monthly “Beach Brief” provides subscribers with an overview of beach renourishment, dune enhancement, and other major coastal projects.
