July 2026 Designated as Parks and Recreation Month

Countywide community events will celebrate the power of parks

At the June 2 regular meeting of the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners, Commissioner Christian Whitehurst presented a proclamation on behalf of the Board, recognizing July 2026 as Parks and Recreation Month.

The national theme for Parks and Recreation Month, “the Power of Parks and Recreation,” celebrates the vital role parks and recreation play in building strong, healthy, and connected communities. These services improve physical and mental health, protect natural resources, foster environmental stewardship, strengthen social connections, and enhance the quality of life for residents of all ages and abilities.

“For me, every month is Parks & Rec Month,” Commissioner Whitehurst said. “It is the greatest return on investment any community can make to enhance its quality of life. From the beaches to the over 100 park facilities these folks manage… it’s really a testament to [their] good work, and the lifestyle that people have come to St. Johns County to live.”

Among its many assets, the St. Johns County Parks and Recreation Department manages:

  • 270 community programs
  • 126 athletic fields
  • 106 parks
  • 41 playgrounds
  • 9 community centers

To celebrate Parks and Recreation Month, the department has planned a month-long series of community events and activities designed to encourage residents to explore local parks, discover recreational opportunities, and experience firsthand the power of parks in their daily lives.

Jamie Baccari, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation, emphasized the impact parks have on the community.

“Parks and Recreation Month is an opportunity to highlight the important role our parks, public facilities, and recreational programs play in enhancing quality of life throughout St. Johns County,” Baccari said. “Our parks provide places for recreation, conservation, wellness, and community connection, and they preserve the natural and cultural resources that make our county unique.”

The month’s activities will take place at parks and facilities throughout the County, encouraging residents to visit new locations and learn about the diverse recreational opportunities available within their park system.

Tess Simpson, Community Programs Manager, highlighted the variety of activities planned for residents.

“Our team has planned a full month of activities designed to welcome residents and visitors of all ages and abilities into our parks and programs,” Simpson said. “Whether you’re attending a family event, learning a new skill, just enjoying the outdoors, or even visiting a park for the first time, we hope Parks and Recreation Month helps residents connect with their community and discover everything available right here in St. Johns County.”

Events scheduled throughout July include:

There will also be a month-long giveaway opportunity for those who attend the events.

“We’re truly blessed in St. Johns County to have great amenities and fantastic facilities,” said Ryan Kane, Director of Parks and Recreation. “Whether it’s our boat ramps, our beaches, our passive parks, [or] our sports facilities, we have great places for the great people of St. Johns County to utilize, and we’re appreciative of the great staff who put their effort and passion into it. We really appreciate the Board of County Commissioners and the administration for supporting Parks and Recreation.”
