On July 8, 2026, Emergency Management Deputy Director Kelly Wilson, shared hurricane preparedness guidance for the community during the Behind the SJCenes podcast broadcast live on WSOS 103.9 FM. Kelly highlighted simple steps to protect lives and property ahead of potential storms. The Atlantic Hurricane Season officially began on June 1, and St. Johns County Emergency Management is urging all residents to take proactive steps now to prepare for potential storms and protect their families. The St. Johns County Hurricane Preparedness Guide (PDF) is available online and printed copies are available at St. Johns County Public Library System branches. St. Johns County Emergency Management encourages residents to follow three key preparedness steps:
- Know Your Zone: Determine whether your home is in an evacuation zone and understand your risk from storm surge and flooding.
- Have a Plan: Develop a family emergency plan that includes evacuation routes, shelter options, and communication strategies.
- Build a Hurricane Supply Kit (PDF): Assemble essential supplies, including water, nonperishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and important documents.
St. Johns County Emergency Management conducted its annual hurricane preparedness exercise at its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) earlier this year, which the Office of Public Affairs captured on video.
Behind the SJCenes is produced every 1st and 3rd Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. on WSOS 103.9, with a bi-weekly recap of the previous day’s Board of County Commissioner’s meeting and a featured guest interview for a live radio broadcast. The program is an effort to support the Community Trust priority of the County’s Strategic Plan. The goal is to enhance community trust through proactive communication to foster engagement and build an environment of public participation.
