The park is named after Abraham S. Mussallem, to honor the businessman and philanthropist who constructed the Villa Zorayda in downtown St. Augustine.
Born on January 3, 1871, in Zahlah, Béqaa, Lebanon, he immigrated to the United States to study law but chose to settle in St. Augustine, where he became a significant figure in the community.
In 1913, Mussallem acquired the Villa Zorayda, a historic building in downtown St. Augustine. Originally constructed in 1883 by Franklin W. Smith, the Villa Zorayda was inspired by the Alhambra Palace in Spain. Mussallem transformed the property into a museum showcasing his extensive collections of Egyptian antiquities, oriental rugs, and fine arts. The Villa Zorayda Museum, as it is now known, remains a testament to his contributions to the cultural heritage of St. Augustine.
Beyond his work with the Villa Zorayda, Mussallem was known for his philanthropic efforts and his deep appreciation for the arts and history. Mussallem Beachfront Park serving as a reminder of his impact on the community and continuing his legacy.
