Public Library Announces 2026 Summer Reading Program

“Stars, Stripes, and Stories” at SJCPLS with engaging events and rewards for all ages

The St. Johns County Public Library System (SJCPLS) is excited to announce its “Stars, Stripes, and Stories” 2026 Summer Reading Program beginning May 31 through July 25. Join SJCPLS for a summer of educational and family-friendly fun as they celebrate the stories that make our nation. Participants may pick up their free reading logs from any library branch or bookmobile to earn prizes for every five days tracked.

Additionally, over 100 entertaining and informative events are planned throughout this nine-week reading adventure, along with regularly scheduled story-time, a book club, and STEM offerings.

“What better way to beat the heat than by having a blast at the library?” said Lisa Calvert, Assistant Branch Manager and Youth Services Librarian. “There’s a parade of exciting programs inspiring star-spangled fun and reading all summer long.”

Patrons are encouraged to stop by any of the six SJCPLS branches to enjoy:

  • Americana-themed family festivities, including games, scavenger hunts, and more.
  • Educational, close-up experiences exploring our nation’s natural wonders presented by partner organizations the Garden Club of St. Augustine, St. Johns County Parks and RecreationWild Lessons, and Wild Wonders.
  • Arts, crafts, movies, trivia, and so much more saluting the U.S.A.’s 250th anniversary!

As community partners in education, SJCPLS encourages families to read together during the summer break.

“Preventing the ‘summer slide’ is one of the most important things we can do for our young readers,” said Debra Rhodes Gibson, Library System Director. “The Summer Reading Program keeps kids engaged, learning, and building the skills they need for a strong start to the school year.”

The “Stars, Stripes, and Stories” Summer Reading Program is proudly sponsored by SJCPLS’s multiple Friends of the Library groups. This year’s theme was designed and created by Flagler College student Hailey Clark in celebration of the nation’s semiquincentennial.
