SJC Hosting SUN Trail River-to-Sea Loop Community Open House

Segments include State Road A1A (Red Cox Drive to Santander Street) and A1A Beach Boulevard (Pope Road to State Road A1A)

St. Johns County will host a joint community open house from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 26, at the Anastasia Island Branch of the St. Johns County Public Library System, located at 124 Sea Grove Main St., St. Augustine Beach, to share information on two segments of the SUN (Shared-Use Nonmotorized) Trail River-to-Sea Loop.

County and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) staff will be available in an open-house format to provide project information, answer questions, and discuss the design of these adjacent segments. The projects are being presented together to support coordinated planning and a continuous trail experience for the community. The proposed improvements are intended to enhance multimodal access for pedestrians and cyclists while supporting long-term transportation efficiency. Staff will also evaluate strategies to minimize impacts to nearby neighborhoods and businesses as the design process advances.

The River-to-Sea Loop represents one of the largest coordinated trail efforts in Northeast Florida. The regional, multiuse trail network will eventually span approximately 260 miles across five northeast Florida counties and form part of the East Coast Greenway. When complete, the network will strengthen connections between communities while preserving the region’s natural character.

In St. Johns County, the project is being advanced in multiple segments through a coordinated effort between County and State partners. The trail is expected to expand recreational opportunities for residents, support eco-tourism, and improve access to local businesses.

Both County and FDOT segments are currently in the design phase. Construction funding for this segment would be awarded through FDOT as part of a future state funding cycle.

This project supports the County’s Strategic Plan by promoting responsible infrastructure, protecting natural resources, and expanding accessible transportation options for residents of all ages and abilities.

Project information will be available for public review at the open house, and additional updates will be shared as the design process moves forward. St. Johns County remains committed to delivering infrastructure investments that balance efficiency, environmental stewardship, and community character.
