St. Johns County Recognized May 2024 as Water Safety Month

At the May 7, 2024, St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners Regular Meeting, Sarah Arnold, Chair, District 2 issued a proclamation recognizing May 2024 as Water Safety Month. Representatives from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Coast Guard Northeast, National Park Service, Florida Fish and Wildlife, St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office St. Johns County Fire Rescue, St. Johns County Marine Rescue, and St. Augustine Beach Police Department attended the meeting to receive the proclamation.
St. Johns County, known for its 42 oceanfront miles and 216 square miles of inland waterways, welcomes both residents and visitors each year for boating and beach activities. With this popularity comes the responsibility of ensuring public safety in and around the water. Therefore, public safety professionals annually emphasize the joys and hazards associated with the ocean, inland waterways, pools, and other bodies of water throughout St. Johns County.
Water safety education plays a crucial role in preventing drownings and recreational water-related injuries. Public awareness campaigns focus on rip current awareness, hazardous weather awareness, boating safety, and the importance of life jackets.
In addition to National Water Safety Month, St. Johns County recognizes National Boating Safety Week and National Beach Safety Week, both occurring in May. St. Johns County also acknowledges the significant role that swimming and aquatic-related activities play in supporting good physical and mental health and enhancing the quality of life for all residents and visitors.
