St. Johns County Public Works recently prepared approximately 14,000 free sandbags for a three-day distribution event held at six locations throughout the county as part of its annual hurricane preparedness efforts. The annual distribution helps residents take proactive steps to protect their homes and property from potential flooding before severe weather threatens the area. The Office of Public Affairs produced a video highlighting the sandbag distribution effort and the County’s commitment to hurricane preparedness.
County staff worked across six distribution sites over three days to provide sandbags and assist residents with loading. The event is one of many ways St. Johns County prepares for hurricane season and supports residents before, during, and after severe weather events.
Preparing the 14,000 sandbags required approximately two weeks of work by Public Works Road and Bridge staff. The process typically begins in early May and utilizes a sandbag machine to efficiently fill and prepare bags ahead of distribution.
“Preparing early is one of the most effective ways residents can improve their safety and readiness during hurricane season,” said Shawn Tackett, Public Works Superintendent for St. Johns County Road and Bridge. “This effort takes weeks of planning and preparation by our staff, and we’re proud to provide this resource to help residents get ready before a storm is approaching.”
St. Johns County Public Works has provided pre-filled sandbag distribution events for residents for the past three years. Prior to implementing the current program, the County supplied residents with sand and empty bags at self-service locations throughout the county ahead of storm season.
Residents who received sandbags are encouraged to retain them for future storms rather than disposing of them after hurricane season. Sandbags should be stored in a dry, shaded location when not in use to help prevent deterioration.
In addition to obtaining sandbags, residents are encouraged to review emergency plans, assemble disaster supply kits, know their evacuation zones, and sign up for emergency alerts. The annual sandbag distribution event supports St. Johns County’s Strategic Plan by helping residents prepare for emergencies before they occur. St. Johns County remains committed to working year-round to benefit residents and strengthen community resilience before, during, and after severe weather events.
