St. Johns County Progresses Forward with Fire Station Enhancements

The county is building four new fire stations and renovating an additional two fire stations.

St. Johns County is elevating its current fire station operations by renovating two existing fire stations while building four additional fire stations to maintain excellent public safety coverage of the community by St. Johns County Fire Rescue (SJCFR). During these phases, there will be no reduction of fire station staffing or public safety services, and the continuity of operations for response times of approximately five minutes to 911 calls will be maintained. This is part of the county’s 5-year public safety plan announced in April 2024.

The county has begun a two-year program to renovate two older fire stations, adding more space for firefighters’ living quarters and creating more operational space for fire suppression apparatus.

  • Fire Station #17 was first put into service in 1990 as a volunteer station. It is located at 10001 Cartwheel Bay Avenue off of CR 210 west, and currently houses a Heavy Rescue Squad and an ALS transport ambulance. The renovation is under design, and construction will begin after October 1 to coincide with the new fiscal year.
  • Fire Station #10 was first placed into service in 1985 as a volunteer station. Located at 155 Library Drive in Ponte Vedra Beach, it currently houses an ALS suppression unit and an ALS transport ambulance. The design will begin after October 1 to align with the new fiscal year, and construction is scheduled to start in 2027.

The county has launched an aggressive plan to build four additional fire stations. This will improve the county’s fire coverage for properties outside a five-mile radius of an existing fire station location. This will help with residential and commercial insurance.

  • Fire Station #21, located in Flagler Estates, is under construction and scheduled to be operational by the end of 2025. It is a combined facility for the SJCFR and SJSO that will provide a regional SJSO component and a full apparatus bay for SJCFR and was designed for potential future expansion. The station will house an engine and a tanker. SJCFR has already hired and is training 12 firefighters for this station.
  • Fire Station #22, located in the Silverleaf area, will feature approximately 20,000 square feet combined facility for the SJCFR and the St. Johns Sheriff’s Office (SJSO). This will include 3 ½ fire station bays, a regional Sheriff’s Operations Center, the potential for expansion, and a future backup Communications Center. SJCFR has already hired 33 firefighters to begin training. The station will house a tanker, engine, and ladder truck. Earthwork has begun, with construction soon to follow and an estimated completion date of 2026. In April, the county held a public meeting to gather community feedback on the new fire station plans.
  • Fire Station #23 will be located in the Beachwalk/Twin Creeks region in the county’s northern portion off CR 210. It is estimated to be completed by the end of 2028.
  • Fire Station #24 will be located in the Long-Leaf Pine/Roberts Road area and is estimated to be completed by the end of 2030.
