From colorful characters and fairy-tale towers to imaginative designs inspired by popular movies, creativity was flowing at the 2026 Model Water Tower Competition, hosted by the Florida Section of the American Water Works Association (FSAWWA) Region II on October 24, 2026, at the University of North Florida. St. Johns County Utilities participated in the event, providing judges and engaging students and families through educational outreach.
The competition brought together approximately 70 middle school and high school students who put their engineering and problem-solving skills to the test by designing and constructing functional model water towers. Entries were evaluated on structural and hydraulic efficiency, materials and cost, and design ingenuity.
St. Johns County Utilities was one of three utilities hosting informational tables, giving students and families an opportunity to explore engineering and career opportunities in the water industry while learning about essential utility services and water conservation. Students also participated in an interactive water conservation pledge activity, encouraging them to consider simple ways to protect water resources.
Larry Miller, Assistant Director of St. Johns County Utilities, served as a judge in the artistic merit category, evaluating the creativity, colors, and themes incorporated into the students’ designs.
“The creativity these students brought to their designs was impressive. It was exciting to see their personalities shine through while applying engineering principles to a real-world challenge. Experiences like this can spark an interest in careers that help serve and strengthen our communities,” Miller said.
St. Johns County Utilities’ participation supports the St. Johns County Strategic Plan‘s emphasis on strengthening community partnerships, promoting public engagement, and cultivating a skilled future workforce through educational outreach and career exploration opportunities.
St. Johns County Utilities thanks FSAWWA Region II and the event organizers for the opportunity to support this year’s competition and celebrate the creativity and accomplishments of participating students.
