The Fire Prevention Division (Fire Marshal’s Office) is a part of the review process for all building permits relating to construction, modification, alteration, or demolition of structures in the unincorporated areas of St. Johns County, and in the City of St. Augustine Beach.

Sky lanterns, also known as “kongming” lanterns, wish lanterns, sky candles or fire balloons. Sky lanterns consist of a paper or fabric balloon that traps heated air produced by an open flame device, usually a candle. The open flame device often is connected to the balloon by a wire frame.

Fire Investigators work cooperatively with operational fire rescue units, department fire prevention personnel, and other governmental agencies to achieve the goal of preventing injuries and property damage as a result of fires as well as reducing the crime of arson in our community.

Effective 2011, the St. Johns County Fire Marshal’s Office began a new process for issuing the 9 Seasonal Firework permits authorized by the State of Florida for St. Johns County. Applicants who want to participate in the lottery selection process for Seasonal Fireworks in Tent Sales must submit the completed Fire Marshal’s permit packet. The primary focus of the Training Section is to ensure that the Department is fully capable in providing all types of emergency response—preparation and planning are essential in ensuring a safe, efficient, and effective conclusion to an emergency event.

The requirement for retrofitting fire sprinklers in High-Rise buildings, Section 31.3.5.11 of NFPA 101, has been on the books since 1998 and effective since 2002. While the dates have changed several times over the years the requirement remains the same.

On September 17, 2024, at 5:01 pm in the County Auditorium (500 San Sebastian View), the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners will hold their second and final required public hearing to adopt the Fiscal Year 2025 Millage Rates and Budget.  The meeting will follow the procedure as prescribed by Florida Statute 200.065. The Fiscal Year 2025 Tentative Budget, as presented on September 3, 2024, totals $1,750,868,966.

The St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners (BCC) unanimously approved a $1.8 billion budget for Fiscal Year 2026 (FY2026), marking the County’s first property tax reduction since FY2021. Effective Oct. 1, 2025, the budget allocates $383 million from property tax revenue while making historic investments in public safety, infrastructure, parks, and libraries.
